Pool treatments: manual systems for disinfecting the pool

The various methods for disinfecting swimming pools have evolved over time, but although the results have improved, the basic principle remains the same. Today we’ll explain the most common manual systems for disinfecting swimming pools.

Pool Maintenance

On one hand we have chemical chlorine:

Chlorine is a chemical agent that works by oxidation, converting complex organic waste such as skin, hair, algae, and various organic dirt into simpler compounds that can evaporate as a gas . This is the most widely used, easy, effective, and inexpensive method.

Chlorine tablets (CLORO REIN TAB) are the most common option for maintaining private swimming pools . This method of maintenance has improved significantly in recent years, as current tablets, in addition to chlorinating gradually, contain other products that aid in pool maintenance, such as bactericides, algaecides, crystallizers, fungicides, flocculants, etc. They can be used in liquid or solid form, and the latter can be in tablet or powder form depending on the required speed of action.

We can also use Sodium Hypochlorite manually:

It is commonly used in liquid form. Its formula is NaClO. Sodium hypochlorite solution is frequently used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent. It is obtained from sodium chloride through an electrochemical process. It can be dispensed using a dosing pump.

Its use alters the pH of the water, so monitoring is necessary. It has a powerful disinfectant effect on swimming pools , being lethal to various microorganisms, viruses, and vegetative bacteria. Its residual effect enhances its disinfecting power. Its main drawbacks are its cost and handling, as it is highly corrosive and requires a ventilated tank system and dosing pumps.

Finally, we can talk about Bromine:

It acts similarly to chlorine as a disinfectant, but is more active at a high pH:

The advantages? It doesn’t cause unpleasant odors or irritate the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, hair, or clothing . It’s also more effective at eliminating algae. It’s sold in tablet form and can also be used with automatic dispensers. The drawback is that, unlike chlorine, bromine is a more expensive product, but it offers the advantage of not producing unpleasant odors when combined with other chemicals to create bromamines, unlike the distinctive smell of chloramines.
