Both heat lovers and heat haters will agree that a summer without high temperatures isn’t summer. This year’s summer is expected to be warmer than usual, according to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), but with a pool, there’s nothing to fear: a quick dip and you’ll be as good as new!
However, the water in our swimming pool can suffer from high temperatures , and as we’ve mentioned before, its maintenance can become more demanding during these months. In this post, we’ll show you how to protect your pool from the summer heat.
WHAT CAUSES THE HEAT TO YOUR POOL?
There’s no exact figure, but ideally, the water temperature in outdoor pools usually ranges between 24 and 30 degrees Celsius or higher , depending on the location, the area where the pool is situated, and of course, the climate. With the rise in temperatures during the summer, several problems can arise, and that’s why we want you to be aware of them:
-
WATER EVAPORATION AND INCREASED CONSUMPTION
This is perhaps the most obvious consequence. Prolonged and intense heat causes a gassing effect in the water, meaning that the rate of evaporation increases and the pool will need to be refilled. In very hot places, the water level can drop by up to 2 cm . This can represent an extra expense to replace the lost water.
One solution to this problem is the installation of covers or tarpaulins , which are also especially useful for protecting the pool throughout the year.
-
WATER COLOR CHANGE
If you notice your pool water turning greenish or cloudy, it could be due to an imbalance in the pH (it should be between 7.2 and 7.6). Additionally, high temperatures reduce the effectiveness of disinfectants , as they are quite volatile. Therefore, it’s essential to be more vigilant during the warmer months and intensify water alkalinity checks to maintain optimal conditions and ensure safe swimming.
-
INCREASE IN ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION
This problem is related to the previous one. If the disinfection products lose their effectiveness, you will have to increase the filtration time with the water treatment plant, which will result in a higher electricity bill.
Having a pool in the summer requires certain maintenance that can’t be overlooked. It’s always important to monitor the pool water to prevent damage or more serious problems.
